Serbian Verb BITI — “to be”

BITI is irregular and wears many faces: full present, short clitics, conditional, the budem-form, and the past participle. Pick the correct form for the person and tense shown.

The many forms of BITI
Present — full: jesam, jesi, jest, jesmo, jeste, jesu. (Stressed; answers “da li” questions.)
Present — short clitics: sam, si, je, smo, ste, su. (The everyday forms: ja sam, on je.)
Conditional: bih, bi, bi, bismo, biste, bi — “I would be”, ja bih.
Present II (budem-form): budem, budeš, bude, budemo, budete, budu — used after da / ako and in the future perfect (da budem, budem radio).
Past participle: bio (m), bila (f), bilo (n), bili / bile / bila (pl) — agrees in gender & number (bio sam, bila sam).

3sg trap: the full form is jest, the clitic is je. 3pl of both presents is -su / jesu.
